Acne – Description

Acne and impure skins are a common problem that cosmeticians are required to deal with on an almost daily basis. The causes are diverse ranging from environmental influences, hormonal disturbances, hereditary factors, bacteria, problems with ones metabolism and stress related factors.

Not all kinds of acne can be dealt with by a cosmetician or Skinologist. In severe cases one should make an appointment with a renowned dermatologist for the necessary tests to establish if the problem is as a result of a hormonal imbalance or other factors. In any event all severe cases of Acne such as Acne Conglobata must be treated by a Dermatologist together with your Dr. Baumann Skinologist.

A good cosmetician/Skinologist may work together with the Dermatologist by providing regular deep cleansing treatments and the correct homecare for the customer to support the salon treatments and dermatological recommendations to support better and faster results.

Acne is also a problem on a psychological level and can dramatically affect the emotional well being of the customer. Acne usually begins with blackheads. Blackheads are not dirt, they’re actually the result of oil and dead cells getting trapped in a pore where they block the duct and mix with bacteria. They then turn black when exposed to air. Red pimples develop when blackheads become inflamed and they spread when touched with dirty hands. When the pimple becomes infected, it develops a white head or pustule. These can cause scarring. If you noticed the acne you had when you were 15 has returned in your 30s, rest assured, you’re in good company. One in five women between the ages of 25 and 40 suffer from adult acne. There are several causes of adult acne these are: Stress, cosmetics, hormones and birth control pills. Stress causes your oil glands to overcompensate. Certain cosmetics lead to bacteria-laden pores. Hormones cause the sebaceous glands to overact and birth control pills with androgen in them can cause breakouts.

Last resort
A dermatologist may clear your skin up fast but the side effects can be drastic and a matter of “overkill” If you have basic acne, you can treat it effectively with  regular visits to your Point Of Skin salon /SPA . The treatments must be carried out by a qualified Skinologist and a carefully prescribed homecare regimen must be carried out on daily basis. For serious acne as mentioned previously a dermatologist has an arsenal of products to clear up your skin. Retinoids, antibiotics, azelaic acid and birth control pills. These are all options usually covered by insurance. You might consider laser treatments, but these are more costly (about $500-$2,400) and can result in Hyper pigmentation. Severe cases can be treated with Accutane, which is a 5-month course that is considered the most effective treatment available. It can, however result in many serious side effects including birth defects if taken during pregnancy and should really be a last resort. It doesn’t solve the problem it just masks it.
